TWO NEW MANDARIN INTENSIVE COURSES STARTING IN JULY 2007 AT
WATERLOO HOUSE COLLEGE
HOUSE
As everyone is aware, the international economic community
is changing rapidly and, alongside Germany, Japan and the US,
China is now emerging as one of the most important economies
in the world. This presents great opportunities for companies
based in Britain.
Why choose Waterloo House College?
Waterloo House College has teamed up with the Meridian Chinese
Studies Centre, a pioneer in the development of the teaching
of Mandarin. We think that what is special about this particular
Mandarin course is the way it is being taught and the person
who is teaching it. Below we list some of the aspects of the
course that we regard as unique and why it is course that you
should follow.
The teacher
- Mr. Liqun [David] Su, the teacher who will be running
the course, is well known as having been the main Mandarin
teacher
at the School of Oriental and African Studies of the University
of London between 1987 and 2007
- David Su also set up the
BBC Mandarin Language Programme in 2004
The course
- The course emphasises both Chinese culture and language
by teaching them together
- It is based on the Dao of Chinese
grammar or what we know as the concept of the Yin and the
Yang cycle of balance and
imbalance
- This approach seeks to explain quickly and thoroughly
the harmony present in the structure of the Chinese sentence
- Students will use Mr. Su’s ‘A Dao of Chinese
Grammar’ Elementary book
- Sixty hours of participation
in the TDR course can be enough to grasp the fundamental
grammatical concepts of the language
and to read 80% of the most frequently used Chinese characters,
as well as to speak basic Chinese
- TDR means that Tian-Time-
comes before Di-Place- and before Ren-People- in the Chinese
sentence
- Students will receive a certificate at the end
of the course
- Students may have the opportunity to visit
China at the end of the course
What is different?
- Our course costs about 60% of the cost of an equivalent
course at a university
- There will be at least 2 skilled assistants
per class in addition to the main teacher
- It is also in
effect cheaper than a lot of seemingly cheaper courses
because you do not need to study as long
as you do
with those courses to achieve the same results
- 75% of
class time is devoted to practical communication in the
language
